HOBBS, N.M. – University of the Southwest defeated Mid-America Christian 7-5 Saturday afternoon in non-conference action Jake Williams Field.
PJ Sanchez and
CJ Aviles proved to be potent offensively and each pushed across a pair of runs.
Mike Davis and
Micah Tambur started the scoring for the Mustangs in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI singles.
Ben Tingen earned the win on the bump. Tingen tossed five innings and scattered six hits, five runs (four earned) and fanned four batters while walking four.
As a team USW (3-5) pounded out nine hits and stranded five base runners.
In the matinee game played earlier in the afternoon, MACU (7-3) defeated USW 6-3 in a 10-inning affair.
Axel Arrieta started for the Mustangs and was credited with the no-decision. He threw seven innings and scattered 10 hits, allowed three runs and no walks and struck out 12 batters.
Marvin Ortiz was credited with the loss. Ortiz tossed one and a third innings and allowed five hits, three runs (two earned) and no walks and fanned one batter.
Kenny Corona batted 2-for-5, including a bases-clearing two RBI triple.
The Mustangs return to action Friday, February 16 and host Randall University at noon.
