ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of the Southwest baseball opened its 2018 season this past weekend at the brand-new Albuquerque Sports Complex. The Mustangs split its four-game set with NCAA Division II New Mexico Highlands (2-2).
After dropping the opening day games by scores of 16-3 and 13-5, USW (2-2) responded swiftly and defeated the Cowboys 7-4 and 7-6.
The Mustangs pounded out 11 hits and used a five-run first inning en route to a 7-4 win in game one played Sunday.
Sam Moreno batted 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI and also scored a run.
JC Velasco also went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in and a run scored.
PJ Sanchez and
Kody Kolb each added an RBI.
Axel Arrieta earned the win for the Mustangs. Arrieta tossed five innings and scattered four hits, allowed four runs and fanned nine batters while allowing four walks.
In game two USW scored three runs in the fifth inning and a pair of runs in the sixth inning to close-out the contest.
Anthony Rios batted 3-for-4 with three RBI, while
Ean Smith and Moreno brought in a pair of runs.
Ben Tingen earned the win on the bump. Tingen threw five innings and scattered five hits, allowed three runs and fanned four batters while walking six.
USW returns to action Friday and plays host to Mid-America Christian for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
