HOBBS, N.M. - University of the Southwest baseball split the last two games of the weekend series against conference member Texas College, dropping the opener 4-3 and cruising to a 9-0 win in the night cap at The Jake.
 
On the bump for game one was senior Axel Arrieta. The El Paso, Texas native pitched five innings, allowed seven hits, walked two and fanned six batters.
 
Relieving Arrieta in the sixth inning was freshman David Flores. Flores pitched three innings, allowed two hits and struck out two batters.
 
Senior Sam Moreno drilled a solo homerun to left-center field in the third inning. Moreno went 1-for-3 from the plate, adding one RBI and one run. 
 
Senior Kenny Corona went 4-for-4 and added two runs, while PJ Sanchez went 1-for-3. 
 
On the bump for game two was senior Alex Goodman. The Gilbert, Ariz. native pitched six innings and allowed only one hit, no walks and fanned seven batters. 
 
Relieving Goodman in the seventh inning was senior Marvin Ortiz. Ortiz allowed one hit and struck out two batters.
 
Junior Ben Tingen went 3-for-4 at the plate while scoring three runs for the Mustangs. 
 
Senior Ean Smith went 2-for-3, adding two RBI and two runs, while junior Anthony Rios went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and one run. 
 
In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior Chris Estrada hit a two-run home run. Estrada went 2-for-3 from the plate and added four RBI.
 
USW continues conference play Friday, March 16^th for a doubleheader against Louisiana State University-Alexandria at Jake Williams Field.
