HOBBS, N.M. – University of the Southwest softball earned a hard-fought split with Texas A&M – Texarkana Tuesday afternoon. The Mustangs picked up game one 8-6 and dropped the nightcap by sliver, 5-4.
In game one USW used a five-run fourth inning to put the game out of reach.
Junior
Gabby Heckmann batted 1-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run, while junior
Madylin Matthys went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs. Senior and leadoff hitter
Brianna Gonzalez finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Senior
Alexis York proved to be a factor in the seven-spot in the lineup. The Barstow, California native batted 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs.
Senior
Madison Garcia earned the win in the circle. The Midland, Texas native tossed five and one-third innings and allowed 12 hits and six runs and five walks and fanned three batters.
MyKaya Olivas entered in relief and tossed one and two-third innings and scattered two hits and allowed one walk and struck out a pair of batters to earn to the save.
Game two went back and forth with Eagles scoring three runs in the top of the seventh to outgun USW.
Sophomore
Madison Rosenthal and junior
Chelsea Carroll each batted 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Matthys went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Heckmann batted 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Heckmann also absorbed the loss. The Cannon Falls, Minn. native tossed six innings and scattered seven hits, allowed a pair of runs and two walks and fanned two batters.
USW (4-11, 1-4 RRAC) closes out its series with TAMUT (8-13, 5-7 RRAC) Wednesday morning with a single seven-inning game at Baker Field with an 11 a.m. start.
