VICTORIA, Texas – Senior
Adrian Rodriguez and sophomore
CJ Aviles delivered home runs and University of the Southwest fought past University of Houston - Victoria 5-3 in a single nine-inning game Friday afternoon.
With the win, USW improved to 14-14 overall and 3-7 in the Red River Athletic Conference. UHV falls to 6-20 and 2-8 in conference play.
Rodriguez promptly hit a two-run home run over the left field fence in the top of the third inning to put the Mustangs up 2-0. USW continued to play long ball in the top of the fifth when Aviles drilled a three-run home run, also to left field.
Senior
Alex Goodman tossed 8 1/3 innings and earned the win. The Gilbert, Arizona native scattered 10 hits, allowed three runs and one walk and whiffed eight batters. Senior
Aaron Higgins entered in the ninth inning and claimed the save.
Rodriguez batted 3-for-4 and drew a walk, while Aviles went 1-for-3.
Sophomore
Jesus Chavez and senior
Kenny Corona each batted 2-for-4.
The two teams complete their series Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
