HOBBS, N.M. – Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, University of the Southwest baseball scored four runs and rallied past Wiley College 6-5 Friday afternoon in Red River Athletic Conference action at Jake Williams Field.
Senior
Chris Estrada started the bottom half of the inning with a base hit to center field. Senior
Sam Moreno and sophomore
CJ Aviles then reached base on back-to-back walks. Junior
Ben Tingen singled to left field to push across a pair of runs. Later in the inning senior
Kenny Corona added a two RBI single to left field and put the Mustangs in front.
Corona batted 2-for-3 and seniors
Ean Smith and
Adrian Rodriguez each added an RBI. Senior
JC Velasco went 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Senior
Alex Goodman started and was credited with the no decision. The Gilbert, Arizona native tossed 4 1/3 innings and scattered five hits, allowed three runs and four walks and struck out five batters.
Freshman
JJ Kruzel relived Goodman in the fourth inning and tossed 1 1/3 before giving way to sophomore
Josiah Acton. The Albuquerque, New Mexico native shut the door on the Wildcats and earned the win.
The two teams also played a game earlier in the afternoon, which was a controversial 3-2 Wiley win.
USW and Wiley meet again Saturday morning with a 10 a.m. doubleheader at The Jake.
