TEXARKANA, TX---The Lady Mustangs took their undefeated conference record with them to Texarkana, TX on Saturday and drove home Saturday night with their first conference loss of the season. USW lost to the Eagles in the 98th minute of overtime off of a rebound goal from a penalty kick. The loss puts the Lady Mustangs record at 5-1-1 and 3rd place in the conference.
"Frustration seemed to get the best of us trying to score. We knew this team was capable of putting up a battle, so it wasn't going to be so easy. It was their senior day and they had to win in order to be in the mix for making the conference tournament so they fought with desperation. It was frustrating playing a team that only plays kick and chase. We had to make a few changes throughout the game that gave us some decent chances but finding the net was getting in our heads. We had solid chances and possessed the majority of the game but goals make you win and we couldn't do that today." said Head Coach
D'Angelo Garcia.
The Lady Mustangs did not have their normal scoring chances as they only had 5 shots on net.
Priscilla Garcia led the team in shots with 7 total and 2 coming on net.
Andrea Martinez coming off a Defensive Player of the Week award saved 9 shots and allowed the only goal of the game in the 98th minute. The Eagles were awarded a penalty kick and Martinez saved the initial shot, but the rebound bounced right back to Emily Juarez who put it in the back of the net.
"We can question all day long if the foul was an actual foul that earned them a penalty kick, but if we were to do our job before, we wouldn't of been in that situation especially in overtime. Andrea made the pk save but we didn't follow the rebound. It's the small things that cost us. After losing our first game in conference, it makes it harder on ourselves to win regular season. These two games next week are both must wins for achieving what we're trying to do and it's not so easy on the road. It was very emotional after the game losing like that which I know we will bounce back stronger. These girls are itching for the next two games so we can redeem ourselves. This is what conference is all about.
The Lady Mustangs are back in action this Thursday as they take on the LSU-Shreveport Pilots in Shreveport, LA. LSU-S sits right behind USW with a 5-2 record in conference.
