ALEXANDRIA, LA---The 2019 Men's Soccer season came to an end on Saturday afternoon after a 2-1 loss to LSU-Alexandria. The Mustangs were in desperate need of a victory to keep their postseason chances alive. Unfortunately the Mustangs fell just short of the RRAC Tournament as they finished the season in 8th place (Paul Quinn was not eligible for postseason play) with a 3-6 conference record.
The Mustangs final record for the season was 3-12.
"The hardest thing about going to Louisiana with must-win games, is the fact that you're playing two top teams that are good and have a lot of international players. Unfortunately we couldn't get the tie or the win. We allowed goals the same way we have been allowing goals, and that's on set pieces. We don't have much height, so they are a battle each time. We checked out for two set pieces and that's how we lost the game. They didn't really have a threat on us but set pieces play a huge rule in games that we lost this year. The boys played hard in the second half. They knew what was at stake. But this time we couldn't turn the game around. The season is officially over and it's hard to take it in. We had all the scenarios we wanted in front of us but we fell 1 goal short." said Head Coach
Edgar Negrete after the season finale.
The Mustangs were able to get a late goal by
Alan Sanchez in the 81st minute, but it was a little too late to mount a comeback.
"Now that the season is over and my first season is under my belt, I have to re-evaluate the good and the bad and go back to the drawing board. My goal is to make sure USW is a respected team in the conference. It's back to the drawing board and I have to understand we can only go up from here. It was a lot of change to becoming a head coach but it's an opportunity I am very grateful for and thankful to be giving this chance by (Athletic Director)
Steve Appel. I know I gave it my best and it's time to work hard now in the off season to be ready for next year." said Head Coach
Edgar Negrete following his first full season as Head Coach of the USW Soccer Program
