HOBBS, NM---The Lady Mustangs scored a season-high 74 points on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately it was not enough as the Paul Quinn Tigers defeated the Lady Mustangs 80-74. The loss brings USW's conference record to 0-3 on the early conference season.
"Our girls fought today. We are not where we want to be yet, but we saw stretches of it this afternoon. We wanted to take it quarter by quarter today. We shot 11-11 from the free throw line in the 1st half and only 7-14 in the 2nd half. We had chances there late to tie the game, it just didn't fall for us today" said Head Coach
Devonte Brewer following the game.
Harlei Haceesa led the Lady Mustangs in scoring with 23 points on 8-21 shooting. The junior was 7-7 from the FT-line and grabbed 5 rebounds as well as 3 assists and 3 steals. Junior
Isabel Rodriguez recorded her 3rd straight double-double as she had 16 points and 13 rebounds. The El Paso native also had 5 assists.
Mykal Thomas was the other Lady Mustang with double-digit points as she had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Freshman Martinique Larvingo looked great in her first career start as she had 8 points and 9 rebounds.
"These girls accepted the challenge the last few weeks. We've put up a lot of shots in the gym and it's starting to pay off. I thought Harlei was going to have a breakout game because of the work she's been putting in outside of practice. Isa (
Isabel Rodriguez) is a rebounding machine and scored 16 points with it. We just need a few more girls to get going and we should be in good shape." said of his two leading scorers today,
Harlei Haceesa &
Isabel Rodriguez.
The Lady Mustangs are headed to Dallas on Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Dallas Christian Tournament before heading into Winter Break. The ladies will travel to Texarkana, TX on January 9th to start up the conference schedule as they take on the Texas A&M-Texarkana Eagles. "We have some time to get healthy these next few weeks during the holiday break." said Coach Brewer of the much needed break for these Lady Mustangs.
