Softball Falls To Sul Ross

Hobbs, NM - The Lady Mustangs Softball team took on Sul Ross State University on Saturday for a non-conference double header. The Lady Mustangs seemed to do everything right, but the scores just didn't fall in their favor as the dropped both games by a score of 2-1 and 9-5.

GAME 1

Getting the start in game 1 was Senior, Gabby Heckmann. After a tough weekend last week, Heckmann looked to bounce back and that she did as she threw a complete game gem for the Lady Mustangs. Heckmann scattered 5 hits and giving up only 2 earned runs. Unfortunately those two earned runs came in the top of the 7th with the Lady Mustangs clinging to a 1-0 lead. Sul Ross had 3 of their 5 hits in the top of the 7th to help push those runs across the plate.

The Lady Mustangs struggled offensively. Heckmann wasn't the only pitcher dominating in this game as Sul Ross State held the Lady Mustangs to only 2 hits throughout the game. The Lady Mustangs lone run came in the bottom of the 6th inning on a 1st and 3rd situation. Junior Sarena Maynez drew the throw down to second base which allowed Freshman Kenzie Savell to score. The Lady Mustangs went on to lose 2-1.

GAME 2

In Game 2 the Lady Mustangs finally found their stride at the plate. They came out scoring right away in the first inning as Maynez roped a double into the right center gap to get things started. Next at bat Senior, Madylin Matthys ripped an RBI single up the middle to put the Lady Mustangs in the lead 1-0 at the end of the 1st.  Sul Ross State wasn't going to go down quietly as they tied it up in the top of the 2nd inning.

The Lady Mustangs couldn't capitalize on anymore scoring opportunities until the bottom of the 6th. Trailing 4-1, Senior Chelsea Carroll scorched a ball over the left fielders head for a 2 RBI double. Carroll was thrown out advancing to 3rd on the play, but the Lady Mustangs finally found some life again. Sul Ross got a run back in the top half of the 7th. Trailing 5-3 going into the bottom of the 7th is no easy feet to come back on, but the Lady Mustangs weren't going to go away without a fight. With one out Freshman Mariah Garcia crushed a ball to the right field fence for a stand-up triple. She would score on the next play. Now trailing 5-4 the Lady Mustangs needed to get another rally going. Junior Sarena Maynez did just that as she hit a triple of her own into the right center gap. With the tying run on 3rd base and two outs, Matthys drilled a low line drive into the left-center gap for an RBI double. This would send the game into extra innings.

The Lady Mustangs couldn't catch a break in the 8th inning. Sul Ross' 1st batter golfed a 2 run Homerun over the right field fence. Sul Ross would go on to score 2 more runs and the Lady Mustangs would fall 9-5 in 8 innings.

Key contributors in the game were: Mariah Garcia (2-3 with 2 triples), Sarena Maynez (2-3 with 3 runs scored), Madylin Matthys (3-4 with a double, 2 RBIS, and 1 run scored).
