The USW Baseball Program took to the road to begin their 2019 Spring Break Road Trip. The Mustangs traveled north to Plainview, TX to take on the Wayland Baptist Pioneers in a 2 game 7-inning doubleheader. The teams split the series with the Mustangs winning Game One 15-8 and the Pioneers winning Game Two 2-0. The Mustangs record is now 17-14 on the season.
Game 1
USW 15---WBU 8
The offense for the Mustangs has been less than productive over the past 2 weeks, but in Game 1 the bats were wide-awake. The offense exploded for 15 runs on 17 hits and 8 out of 9 starters had a hit in the game and 7 of 9 had multiple hits.
Micah Tambur, Othon Delacruz and
Jake Wyly all had 3 hits on the day. Tambur was 3-5 with 2 RBIs and 1 run scored out of the 2-hole. Junior outfielder Tony Delacruz was 3-5 on the day with 3 runs scored. Designated hitter
Jake Wyly was 3-5 on the afternoon with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Overall the offense drove in 13 runs and had 5 doubles on the afternoon.
Freshman shortstop
Brent Thompson from Bosque Farms, NM recorded his 1
sthit of his career on Tuesday and made it count as he drove a double in the left-center gap. Thompson later drove another double in the gap driving home a pair of runs. Thompson was 2-3 on the day with 3 runs, 3 RBIs, 2 doubles and a walk.
Orlan Warren got the ball on the mound and did not disappoint in tough conditions. Despite wind blowing straight out, Orlan held the potent Pioneer offense to 5 earned in 5 1/3 inning. The sophomore righty from Piedra Vista HS in Farmington, NM struck out 5 and allowed only 6 hits.
Dionisio Diaz came in relief with 1 out in the 6
th and worked himself out of a few jams to close out the game.
Game 2
WBU 2---USW 0
Game 2 was a completely different ballgame for both clubs. Wayland scored a single run in the 1
st and 2
nd innings, which was all they needed to win the ballgame as the Mustang offense, despite having 6 hits could not push a run across.
Sophomore
Nick Martinez got his 1
st career start on the mound for the Mustangs and looked like a seasoned veteran up there as he went 5 innings allowing 1 earned run (2 runs), 5 hits and struck out 7 batters. Martinez was able to keep the Pioneer batters off balance with his combination of his fastball and changeup.

The Mustangs continue their road trip as they travel over to Alexandria, Louisiana as they take on the LSU-Alexandria Generals in a 3-game conference series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 5:00 central time and a single 9-inning game on Saturday.
