Hobbs, NM - The Lady Mustangs hosted Texas College in a 3-game conference series over the weekend. The offense came out hot in all 3 games of the series which has been lacking in previous weeks. The Lady Mustangs explosive offense earned them the sweep and first conference series win of the season to bring their season record to 6-21 overall and 4-8 in conference.
GAME 1 (USW 13 - Texas College 6)
The Lady Mustangs came out swinging right off the bat putting up 5 runs in the first inning.
Sarena Maynez lead things off with a double to center.
Kenzie Savell then bunted her over and beat out the throw for a base hit of her own.
Madylin Matthys came up next and doubled to left field scoring both Maynez and Savell. Matthys would later score on a ball four pass ball to
Monika Madrid. Madrid would come around to score on a
Gabby Heckmann triple to right field. Heckmann would then cross the plate on another pass ball to put the Lady Mustangs up 5-0 at the end of the first.
The game would get interesting in the 3rd inning when Texas College used an error and 6 hits to tie the game up at 5-all and eventually take the lead in the top half of the sixth 6-5. The Lady Mustangs responded in the bottom half of the 7th with 7 runs of their own to regain the lead. They took advantage of two Texas College errors and two extra base hits by Heckmann and
Cecilia Bustamante to take a significant lead over Texas College.
The Lady Mustangs would score one more run in the 5th inning to take a 13-6 which would be the final score. Heckmann would get the win in the circle pitching a complete game giving up 7 hits and 5 earned runs. Savell went 3-3 on the day with 3 runs scored. Matthys went 2-4 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Heckmann had 2 hits, a double and a triple, and 3 RBIs to back up her performance on the mound. Bustamante also had 2 hits on the day with a double and 2 RBIs.
GAME 2 (USW 10 - Texas College 0) [5 innings]
Larissa Madrid got the start in game two where she absolutely dominated on the mound. Madrid pitched her first shutout of the season and even carried a perfect game until it was broken up with one out in the 5th inning. The Lady Mustangs continued their hot bats and backed Madrid up on the offensive side busting out 10 runs on 12 hits.
The Lady Mustangs striked first once again scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning off base hits by Savell, Carroll, Heckmann, and
Madison Rosenthal. The Lady Mustangs big inning came in the second whe they scored 5 runs to take a 7-0 lead. After the lead off hitter flying out, the Lady Mustangs got the next 7 batters on base before a double play ended their inning. The damage had already been done as the Lady Mustangs took a significant lead.
The Lady Mustangs were not done scoring as they plated 3 more runs in the 3rd inning all with two outs.
Mariah Garcia would lead off the inning with a single. She would look to be stranded with the next two batters getting out before a Matthys hit by pitch followed by a
Monika Madrid triple to left that would score both Garcia and Matthys.
Chelsea Carroll then roped a double to left scoring Madrid and giving the Lady Mustangs a 10-0 lead gong into the 4th inning.
Madrid would hold it down on the mound allowing the run rule to take affect and the Lady Mustangs would win 10-0 in 5 innings. Savell, Madrid, Carroll and Heckmann all had two hits each. Madrid also added 4 RBIs.
This win secured the series win for the Lady Mustangs.
GAME 3 (USW 12 - Texas College 3) [5 innings]
After a strong performance on Friday, the Lady Mustangs were looking for the sweep going into the series finale. They continued their hot bats as they busted out a season high 18 hits. Heckmann and Madrid both split time in the circle to help the Lady Mustangs earn the sweep.
Once again the Lady Mustangs scored in the first inning pushing 4 runs across the plate. Maynez and Savell lead off with back to back singles before Matthys hit a triple off the left-field wall. Madrid then came up and roped a double down the left-field line scoring Matthys. Madrid would advance to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Heckmann's sac-fly to center-field.
The Lady Mustangs would score 8 more runs in the third and fourth inning to take a 12-0 lead. Texas College would 3 runs back in the 5th inning, but it wasn't enough to keep the game going as the Lady Mustangs would run-rule them once again to earn the sweep.
Maynez went 4-4 in the game with a double, triple and 4 RBIs. Bustamante went 3-3 on the day. Savell, Matthys, Madrid and
Harley Barber all added two hits each as well.
