MBB: Mustangs set rebound record in victory over Texas College

HOBBS, NM---The Mustang Basketball program welcomed the Texas College Steers to "The Dox" on Thursday evening in their 6th conference game of the season. The Mustangs used a team-record 61 rebounds and 51% shooting from the field to completely dismantle the Steers, defeating them 100-76. The victory brings the Mustangs record to 9-7 on the season and 4-2 in conference play. Their 4-2 record in conference puts them in 4th place in the conference standings.

"I'm proud of the guys. We just outworked them in the 2nd half. We dove on the ground for loose balls, took charges,  and crashed the boards well. I wasn't pleased at the half, despite being up by 10. I thought we were rushing a lot which is out of character for us. We had a great 2nd half. It's good to see us win a ballgame like this against a very good basketball team. This conference is tough each and every night." said Head Coach Cory Hitchcock

The Mustangs totaled 61 rebounds as a team on Thursday night which sets the school record which was previously set on February 20th, 2012 against Bacone College when the Mustangs had 59. 18 of those rebounds Thursday night came on the offensive side of the ball, which led to easy buckets underneath. "We got beat on the boards against Wiley last week, so I wanted that to be a point of emphasis this week. The guys responded to it, they crashed the glass hard and boxed out well. 18 offensive rebounds is huge because it gives us plenty of second-chance opportunities." said Hitchcock.

Senior Joshua Harris led the game in scoring with 26 points (10-16 FG/ 6-8 FT) and added 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Harris continues to fill each stat category on a nightly basis and is happy with the win tonight. "It was an earned win. We worked hard this week and guys are buying into it. It's the little things for us; taking charges and getting on the floor. This was one we really needed to get."  said Harris. Despite the chippiness during the game, the Mustangs remained calm throughout. "We have to remember why we are playing this game. It's bigger than us, we are playing for the school and the name on the front of the jersey and each other." said Harris.

Akeem Black had another solid scoring night with 21 points of his own on 9-15 shooting. The senior recorded 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Tyler Watkins also chipped in 14 points of his own.

Thursday night's crowd inside "The Dox" was a noticeable factor and Coach Hitchcock and Joshua Harris know it contributed to the victory. "That's what makes the difference" said Harris. "Without the crowd these games are nowhere near the same and it made a huge difference."

"When you have a good crowd, the juice gets you going. The baseball team came and asked for jersey's and wanted to get rowdy tonight. I think the environment got to our opponent tonight. It's good to get that backing from the crowd. I want to thank the fans for coming out tonight because it was truly electric. Tonight was the best crowd of the season and it was fun to be apart of" said Hitchcock on the crowd Thursday night.

The Mustangs host Jarvis Christian on Saturday afternoon with tip-off scheduled for 4:00 PM MST.
