HOBBS, NM---The Lady Mustangs faced off against conference foe Texas College on Thursday night. USW defeated Texas College 72-65 thanks in part to 4 players in double-figures. The victory pushed the Lady Mustang's record to 5-10 on the season and 2-4 in RRAC play. The Lady Mustangs now sit in 7th place in the conference standings, 1 spot outside of a spot in the conference tournament.
Head Coach
Devonte Brewer was extremely pleased with how the girls played despite the injuries and setbacks they have had the past few weeks. "I'm proud of the girls. We've dealt with a lot of adversity right now. We only have 8 girls in our rotation right now. With some key players coming off the bench,
Jasmine Rodriguez,
Aubrey Thomas and Jackie Maciel, they came off the bench and gave us excellent minutes. They did a lot of learning today."
Jazmin Rios led the Mustangs in scoring with 16 points (5-10 FG; 4-7 3PT). The 16 points is a career high for Rios here at USW and the 4 made 3-pointers is the most in a single game for her. "It was a great team effort tonight. We have dealt with obstacles and we have been able to adapt to that. Tonight my shots finally started falling and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season. We played with a lot of heart tonight and we have had several individuals stepping up." said Rios following the victory.
Rhianna Bortoli (15 points & 4 steals),
Mykal Thomas (13 points, 2 rebounds and 3 blocks) and
Isabel Rodriguez (11 points and 12 rebounds) all totaled double-figures on the evening.
The Lady Mustangs got to the free throw 32 times on Thursday night and hit 26 of those attempts. Coach Brewer and Assistant Coach
Catarina Garcia knew that if they increased their free-throws and decreased their 3-pt attempts, the ladies would have a better chance of succeeding. "That was definitely part of the game plan. When we shoot 20+ three-pointers in a game, we can't win games. But if we shoot less and get to the line more, we put ourselves in a great situation to win. We have good free-throw shooters and we have to use that to our advantage."
Despite only have 3 girls on the bench right now, Coach Brewer says the team morale and confidence is at an all-time high right now. "The girls come in every day and bring it. With a smaller numbers of girls, everyone is getting more reps in practice which is a good. The girls are showing up in a big way right now." said Coach Brewer. USW takes on Jarvis Christian this Saturday at 2:00 PM MST right here in Hobbs.
