MBB: USW can't overcome slow 1st half against #11 LSU-A

HOBBS, NM---The Mustangs hosted #11 LSU-Alexandria on Saturday afternoon. The contest marked the end of the first half of RRAC conference play for the Mustangs. The Generals defeated the Mustangs 74-63.

"We battled tonight. We cut the lead down to 5 at one point. Just had some blown assignments on the defensive sides of things that led to 2 big buckets. It's back to the drawing board for us. I think we got away from the gameplan. When we were attack the hoop down low, we were scoring buckets. We aren't the type of team to shoot 22 points from the 3-point line. For some reason the guys thought we could do that and be successful. We have to continue to teach them and work with them on understanding our strengths as a team. I'm proud of them though for holding LSU-A under their season scoring average of 96. We just have to do a better job of executing, and that's on us as coaches." said Head Coach Cory Hitchcock

The Mustangs were led by Joshua Harris and Akeem Black once again on the scoring end. Harris finished with 22 points on 10-16 shoting, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 steal. Akeem Black scored 15 points in 36 minutes of play. Black also recorded 9 rebounds and 4 assists. "I thought Josh had a great performance offensively. We have to get Akeem a little bit more aggressive to the hoop. We need some help off the bench though. Tyler Watkins has to be a big guy for us coming off the bench moving forward. Our bench didn't do much today offensively." said Hitchcock on his offense.

The Mustangs finished above .500 after the 1st half of conference play for the first time since 2014. The Mustangs sit at 5-4 in conference play which puts them in 4th place in the conference.

The Mustangs are on the road for their next three contests as they play Huston-Tillotson (1/30), Our Lady of the Lake (2/1) and Paul Quinn (2/8) before they head back for their final home weekend against Texarkana and Wiley.
