ALEXANDRIA, LA---The Mustangs concluded their 2019-2020 regular season on Saturday afternoon as they took on #11 LSU-Alexandria. USW dropped their final game of the season to finish up a successful season under first year Head Coach
Cory Hitchcock. The loss brings the Mustangs record to 16-12 on the season as they finished with a 11-7 conference record. The 16 wins is the most for USW since the 2014-2015 season and the 11 conference wins is the 2nd most in school history behind the 12 wins from the 2014-2015 team.
"What a great game" said Head Coach
Cory Hitchcock. "The guys put two back to back games together where they competed with the top teams in the nation. We are headed in the right direction. Once we limit our mistakes during these close games I feel like great things will happen for our program. I'm proud of the guys and their effort. They played hard the entire game and for the most part our defense was on point. Going into the half down 1 just showed how well we were playing. We came out in the second half and started off strong but when they went on their run we got away from what we were doing and they took advantage of our mistakes. I'm excited to have another opportunity to coach these guys next week. We will learn and grow from this game and hopefully show up on Thursday ready to go. These guys have so much heart and grit. I love coaching them and I just can't wait to see how they perform in the conference tournament."
Akeem Black led the Mustangs in scoring with 20 points on 8-14 shooting in 27 minutes.
Nathaniel White had 15 points off the bench in 25 minutes of play.
Derrick Hall had an outstanding all-around game with 13 rebounds, 9 assists and 6 points.
The Mustangs will take on Texas A&M-Texarkana on Thursday at 7:30 PM CST in the 1st round of the 2020 RRAC Tournament. The tournament is being held in Alexandria, Louisiana at the Rapides Coliseum. Live streaming will be provided through the Red River Conference and stretch internet. Links will be posted later in the week.
