th minute. The game would remain 2-1 the rest of the way with the Mustangs putting the clamps down on the Saint's offense. This victory moves the Mustangs to 4-0 in conference play and a half-game back of (RV) Houston-Victoria. This is the first time the Mustangs have won their first four games of Red River play in program history.
After the big win Head Coach
Edgar Negrete said "Man I'm so excited for this win here today against Our Lady of the Lake. It's a good team that we beat today. We came out playing right out the gate. I can see that the boys wanted it bad in today's game. We've been practicing to keep the ball and play wide and cross the ball in the training ground and we did it exactly like that on the field today for the first goal.
Joshua Olivas played a great ball into the middle where freshman Millalvy was able to tuck it in and score the goal for us. Then 2 minutes later we have
Luis Calvillo win the ball for us and play the ball to Matthew and Matthew turns from 45 yards out and chips the goalie. It was world-class by Matthew. We got lazy and sloppy in the middle but at the end of the day we got the win and that's what we were looking to get. I told the boys that this year we have a special group of boys and we can do something special and winning today would make history by having us start 4-0 in conference play, which hasn't been done here on the men's side. I'm at a loss for words and excited and thankful for this victory and we will enjoy it tonight and get back focused tomorrow and get ready for another tough game here in San Antonio on Saturday."
The Mustang goals were scored by Freshman
MillaIvy Lopez (3) and senior
Matthew Alvarado (5). The Mustangs took 15 shots putting 8 of them on goal. Goalkeeper
Armando Pando recorded 4 saves, on the 5 Shots on goal he faced in another solid performance. The game was a hard-fought one as there were 18 fouls, 6 yellows, and a red card issued in the contest.
The Mustangs will be back in action on the road against Texas A&M University-San Antonio at 2:30 PM MST on Saturday. This will be another Red River contest as USW tries to stay undefeated in conference play.
