The University of the Southwest took on two NCAA Division 2 schools this week. They traveled to Las Vegas, NM to take on New Mexico Highlands University on Tuesday and then headed to Gunnison, CO to take on Western Colorado University on Friday. This continued the challenging non-conference schedule that the Mustangs have played to this point in the season, which has yet to see them play at home through seven games so far.
Tuesday they matched up with New Mexico Highlands University who came into the contest (1-1) with a victory over Eastern New Mexico and a loss to Angelo State. The Mustangs hung tough with the Cowboys of NMHU trailing 35-47 at the half. The Mustangs were able to bring the game back to single digits at 47-56 about three and a half minutes into the second half but were unable to keep the push going. The Cowboys were able to come away with a 101-75 victory. The Mustangs shot the ball well shooting 48% from the field but lost the turnover battle 18 to 6.
Alvin Thompson led the way offensively for the Mustangs pouring in 17 points on 6 of 7 from the field.
Head Coach
James Voight said following the contest "We hung tough for about 28 minutes of 40 during the contest. But in the last 12 minutes, they dominated winning en route to a 101-75 defeat. We have to get better against better teams."
Friday night the Mustangs were hoping for a different outcome against a Western Colorado team that came into the contest (0-2) with two losses against West Texas A&M University. The Mustangs put on a show offensively in the contest. They trailed 39-45 at the half but were able to really get it going in the second half and outscored the Mountaineers 50-38 in the second half. They shot 31 of 60 from the field for a 51.7% field goal percentage and cut the turnovers down to 12.
Brandon Meadows was a handful for Western Colorado scoring 26 on 9 of 15 shooting and pulling in 8 rebounds.
Jeremiah Toney added put up 19 points and 7 boards, and
Ladarrius Spears was able to chip in with 16 points.
Coach Voight said following the contest "Was a good win for us over an NCAA D2 School on their home floor. Was our first road win of the season and something hopefully we can build on. We were down as many as 15 points in the 1st half and cut it to 6 by halftime. We went into the locker room with some momentum. In the 2nd half there were a couple of times we would close to 2 or 3 points and they would push it back to 8. We finally were able to take our first lead around eight minutes to go and never looked back."
The Mustangs will be back in action Friday afternoon at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, CO.
