Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WBB: Mustangs Split in Sul Ross Classic

The University of the Southwest Women's Basketball Team traveled to Alpine, TX over the weekend to take part in the Sul Ross Classic. The Classic saw the Mustangs match up with Texas Lutheran University on Saturday afternoon and Southwestern University on Sunday Afternoon. The weekend saw the Mustangs enter (0-5) on the year and in search of their first victory of the 21-22 campaign.

On Saturday afternoon they took on the Texas Lutheran team that entered the contest (2-2) with wins against McMurry and Concordia (TX) and losses against Hardin-Simmons and Sul Ross State. The game started as a back and forth affair that saw the Mustangs trailing 15-16 at the end of the first quarter. They were able to pull out in front in the second quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs of TLU 19-12 and taking a 34-28 lead to the half. The Bulldogs fought back in the third quarter and took a 44-43 lead to the fourth. The Mustangs were able to control the fourth and come away with the 64-55 victory for their first of the year. The win was the first win as a Head Coach for first-year coach Michael Dominguez. The Mustang defense was ferocious in the contest holding TLU to 25.6% from the field. The Mustangs were led offensively by Harlei Haceesa who had 17 points on 5 of 8 shooting. Shanyce Cabrales added 14 points of her own, and Isabel Rodriguez was close to a triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists.

On Sunday they took on the Pirates of Southwestern University who entered the contest at (2-4) on the year. The contest was tight throughout with Southwestern taking a 32-25 lead to the half. The Pirates were able to do enough to hold onto the led in the second half and came away with a 76-65 victory over the Mustangs. The Mustangs shot 36% from the field in the contest and 28% from three and weren't able to make enough baskets to keep pace with the Pirates who got to the line 42 times in the contest. Isabel Rodriguez led the way for the Mustang offense with 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. The Mustangs got two big performances off the bench from Jazmyne Jenkins who scored 12 and Beverly Bradley who added 10 points and 4 rebounds.

After the weekend Head Coach Michael Dominguez said "Overall, I am very happy with how this weekend's games went. Our team is really starting to put the pieces together and play as a team. The energy and effort in these last two games were amazing and were so much better than what we've shown in our first couple of games. We went 1-1 on the weekend and I told our players that I was still very pleased with how hard we played in our loss, sometimes it just doesn't fall in your favor. If we can keep this energy and effort up throughout the rest of the season, I think we can still hit all of our goals we set at the beginning of the season"

The Mustangs will be back in action Friday evening on the road against Colorado State University-Pueblo in Pueblo, Colorado.
