Oklahoma City, OK---The Lady Mustang Volleyball program competed in their first action since February 12th on Wednesday night. USW took on Sooner Athletic Conference opponent Mid-America Christian University. The Lady Mustangs came into the matchup 0-2 after 2 losses to Wayland Baptist. MACU was 10-9 on the season entering the contest. The Lady Mustangs fought hard in the first two sets of the match, but would eventually fall in the 4th set, losing the match 3-1.
"I thought we opened up the game strong and focused on the game plan, which showed in the first two sets" said Head Coach
Julia Krebs. "Then we let small controllable errors occur early on the in 3rd the 4th set. From there I don't think we could regain our focus. Overall we were a good match-up with them and I look forward to playing them again in two weeks."
USW was lead by
Glenys Maldonado,
Taylor Hardison and
Dylann Bylund. Hardison had 9 kills on 30 attempts and had 2 solo blocks and 2 assist blocks, totaling 13 total points for her in the match. Her fellow senior
Dylann Bylund racked up 10 kills on 33 attempts and recorded 13 digs in the match. True freshman
Glenys Maldonado had a great all-around game in her 3rd college match. Maldonado had 10 kills on 37 attempts, 2 service aces and 1 block assist in the match, giving her a total of 12.5 points in the match. Head Coach
Julia Krebs has been very impressed with Maldonado early on in the season. "Glenys was able to control her hitting on the pin and be a force. I've said from the beginning we need to be able to trust our OH and I have no doubts with her. She stayed calm and collected the entire game which helped her teammates" said Krebs.
The Lady Mustangs fought hard in the first set and pushed the Lady Evangels to their limit losing the set 30-28. USW would take control for the entire 2nd set and win 25-19. But the Lady Mustangs struggled in the 3rd and 4th sets which Coach Krebs attributes to getting out of their initial game plan. "We played our tempo along with limiting unforced errors in the first two sets. When we run our system, we have the control and the court flows. When we allow miss hits/errors/mistakes to get in our heads, then we lose that control and tempo. I think we are right on the cusp of being great and I have no doubt in my team that we will get it all worked out." said Krebs on Wednesday's match.
USW is right back in action on Thursday night as they compete in a tri-match with Howard Payne University and Jarvis Christian College. The matchup with JCC will be the first RRAC matchup for USW this season. Coach Krebs and company have less than 24 hours to make adjustments, but she thinks it will be just a few minor tweaks. "We have to focus on a quick wideout with the first ball kill on serve receive. Really just not erroring out, we had 30 hitting errors against MACU and if we cut that in half we could've taken the match. Staying more focused on your specific job is going to be key for our upcoming games"
