SHREVEPORT, LA---The USW Baseball program concluded their 2021 season on Sunday evening with a loss against (RV) LSU-Shreveport. The Mustangs finished their season at 22-34 overall and 8-16 in conference.
"Overall, I have never been a more proud coach" said Head Coach
Steve Appel. "I will be quite honest, I didn't know what to expect when we first started this season. I knew our team was youthful and that could either hurt us or help us. In the end, our kids battled adversity all year and despite playing 47 games on the road and all our conference games on the road, I think the kids handled adversity quite well. When you look at the dynamics of this team, I think the elements actually provided a bright future for this current team. We don't lose too many guys, and having this club bond and gel the way they did, only provides them a great foundation for the next couple of years. I think our kids played with great pride and passion all year. We accomplished things I don't believe other clubs could have accomplished with these elements. I look forward to getting back to work already with them in the fall and more importantly, at HOME! I thank all those who have supported these kids through this journey. It will be a year no one will ever forget!"
The Mustangs victory in Round 1 against LSU-Shreveport was the program's first tournament victory since 2004. USW fell to Texas A&M-Texarkana in Round 2 and would drop their next game to LSU-Shreveport 12-3.
The Mustangs finished the season with the 21st best fielding percentage in the country (.963) which is the highest in school history. The 56 total games played is the most played in a season in over 20 years.
Gavy Perez-Torres broke the single-season doubles record with 18 this season and ranks 2nd All-Time in walks in a season and RBI's in a season.
Bobby Galindo broke his own record for walks in a season with 27 total this year.
