On Monday, the University of the Southwest men's soccer team played their first game at Bob Moran Field, on the campus of USW, since October 12, 2019. The long absence was due to them starting this season with their first three contests on the road and being forced to play all of their games last year on the road due to Covid restrictions in New Mexico. In the contest, the Mustangs took on an (RV) Southwestern Christian team out of Oklahoma. SCU came in with a record of 4-2 and was receiving votes in the latest NAIA coaches poll. USW entered the contest 0-3 having played some stiff competition to start the year and struggling a bit to get the offense going.
The offensive struggles continued in this contest for USW. They had some opportunities to get the ball in the net but were unable to capitalize. They played a scoreless first half with the physically imposing SCU team but SCU was able to get a score in the 56
th minute of the game. The Mustangs tried to pick up the attack to tie back up the score but to no avail. Goalkeeper
Armando Pando played a tremendous game in goal for the Mustangs, coming out and stymying numerous scoring attempts by SCU. Senior defenders
Dan Moreno and
Brandon Cataldi also had a tremendous impact on the game, playing physical and holding off the SCU forwards.
USW will be at home again tomorrow in an exhibition against Western Texas College. After the exhibition, they will take on Oklahoma Panhandle State on September 18
th at 3:00 PM. They will be looking to get in the win column against an OPSU team that is 2-1 on the year so far.
