Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Kyle Stafford

WSOC: Lady Mustangs Dominate Offensively, Beat UTPB

On Saturday, the University of the Southwest women's soccer team played their first game at Bob Moran Field, on the campus of USW, since November 2, 2019. The long absence was due to them starting this season with their first four contests on the road and being forced to play all of their games last year on the road due to Covid restrictions in New Mexico. They took on NCAA Division II University of Texas Permian Basin in the contest and came away with a 5-3 victory. The Lady Mustangs put forth their highest scoring output of the season with the 5 goals scored. They were on the attack all afternoon putting immense pressure on the UTPB goalkeeper. The match was tied at 2 at halftime but USW was able to pull away in the second half, scoring 3 goals and allowed just one in the final minutes. The Lady Mustangs seem to be hitting their stride as they approach conference play. They started the season 0-2 but have followed that up with a tie to Lubbock Christian and victories over Wayland Baptist and UTPB. This brings their record to 2-2-1 as they approach conference play.

There were several key contributors offensively in the contest. Sophomore Maya Sanchez came off the bench and contributed two goals and two assists for the Lady Mustangs. For Sanchez, it was her first two goals and assists of the season in the breakout performance. Senior Priscilla Garcia, coming off conference offensive player of the week honors, added two goals and an assist of her own. This brings her totals to 5 goals and 4 assists on the year. Sophomore Sierra Saenz scored her second goal of the season, and Jennifer Schroeder and Mayeli Torres both tallied assists in the game. Freshman Kristina Simpson continued to protect the goal, as she has most of the season, and recorded 4 saves in the contest.

The Lady Mustangs have a brief break in their schedule before their next contest. In their next contest, they will open up conference play at Texas College on September 23rd
