Dallas, TX - The University of the Southwest Volleyball Team was hosted by Paul Quinn College for another RRAC Conference matchup this weekend. The Lady Mustangs looked to gain some momentum from a struggling Paul Quinn side.
Game 1
Set one and two of the weekend's first match were tough as both sides went back and forth, matching one another point for point. When it seemed it would continue to be this way, the Lady Mustangs were able to pull away ever so slightly to take set one 25-23 and set two 25-23. USW had put themselves in the driver's seat to take the first match with a three-set sweep. They came out with more dominance as Paul Quinn could not answer back. USW would take the final set 25-15 and the match with a 3-0 sweep.
Senior
Alexia Esparza dominated offensively for the Lady Mustangs, with twenty-three kills and a .452 hitting percentage. Graduate Student
Autumn Lopez was an anchor defensively with twenty-one digs. Senior
Gabriela Tapia led the way with twenty-six assists for the Lady Mustangs.
Game 2
The start of game 2 had Paul Quinn getting out ahead early, jumping all over the Lady Mustangs for a 25-21 win in set one. USW would not let that get to them, as adjustments were made at the break in order to bounce back from the 1-0 deficit. The Lady Mustangs would win the following three sets in dominant fashion, 25-18, 25-17, and 25-13. An impressive showing from USW Volleyball would earn them the series sweep over the weekend.
Esparza added to her already magnificent day with another twenty-five kills. Tapia delivered again with twenty-four assists, and Junior
Valeria Rodriguez also had twenty-four assists. Lopez and Graduate Student
Kennedy McRuffin led the defensive end with twenty-two digs each.
"We finally came together and played with consistency," said Coach Cassandra Smith. "Our chemistry was on point, and we executed to finish out these games. We've known what we are capable of, and it's great to make it happen finally. Extremely proud of this team and the work they've put in; now, we move forward."
