Alexandria, LA – As the season gets closer to being over, the University of the Southwest Women's Soccer team (6-5-1, 4-3-1 RRAC) was hosted by Louisiana State University Alexandria (LSUA) (6-4-1, 4-3-1 RRAC). Both teams came into the matchup looking to improve their position in the standings, as playoffs are just a couple of weeks away.
The Lady Mustangs came out clicking on all cylinders in the first half, making the most of their chances early. In the 13
th minute, Graduate Student
Jennifer Schroeder found Sophomore forward
Maya Sanchez for the game's first goal to put them up 1-0.
This duo would team up once again; this time, Sanchez would assist Schroeder for an impressive shot that found the back of the net in the 18
th minute. USW was not up 2-0 and sitting in the driver's seat after scoring on their first two chances of the game.
It would not take LSUA long to answer back. LSUA's Micah Pond put one away for the Generals after an assist from Alexia Bermejo, making it 2-1 with just under twenty-four minutes to play in the first half.
Pond was not done scoring for LSUA when she found the net again in the 24
th minute, tying the game and eventually sending it into the half with the same score.
With a break to make adjustments, each team looked to get a step ahead of the other. LSUA took that first step to victory when they scored in the 56
th minute. Carolina Quast assisted Theresa Langauer for the game's fifth goal and the third for LSUA.
This would prove to be the difference as LSUA defeated USW 3-2 in a tight contest, putting the Generals ahead of USW in the RRAC standings.
"Today's game was just really a heartbreaking one," said Coach
Edgar Negrete. "Today is a game. I look at the girls and don't know what to say. We did everything right and everything possible that we could have done to win. We came out and got two goals right off the bat. Maya had a brilliant goal on a give-and-go pass with Jenn. Then Jenn had a brilliant one-touch volley that ended in the back of the net. Unfortunately, coming to Louisiana, we have the same issue. LSUA got two calls I disagreed with and allowed them to come from behind and tie the game. Then, later on, eventually got the third. I'm super proud of the girls. They did everything I ask for them to do. It's a bit frustrating that today's game was taken away from them. But we know it will be tough when we're on the road. Overall, I was happy with the girls' efforts. I'm super proud we didn't get the result, but we played with a lot of heart, and as a coach, you can't complain no matter the outcome."
The Lady Mustangs will continue their Louisiana road trip as they travel to Louisiana Christian University this Saturday. Continue to follow USW Athletics and USW Women's Soccer on all social media for scores and updates throughout the season.
