Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Andrew Garcia

MSOC: USW Drop Final Game to TAMUT

Hobbs, NM – The University of the Southwest Men's Soccer team (3-8-4, 2-5-4 RRAC) faced off against Texas A&M-Texarkana (TAMUT) (6-8-3, 4-4-3 RRAC) for the final game of their regular season. The Eagles of Texarkana got the help of two late goals to down the Mustangs 2-0.

The first half saw minimal action as the Mustang defense stifled Texarkana, and Graduate Student goalkeeper Aaron Servin was key with three saves early. Unfortunately, the TAMUT defense also did well in stopping any pressure from the Mustangs.

The first half ended with the teams in a scoreless tie and looking for adjustments to implement in the second half.

The defensive game continued early into the second half, with the Mustangs continuing to play Texarkana tough. It was not until the 79th minute that TAMUT was able to find the back of the net when Jon Olivarez tapped one in to make it 1-0.

It stayed tight all the way until the end, when the Eagles were able to earn a free kick just a bit outside of the box. Olivarez stepped up for Texarkana and curved one into the top corner of the goal to make it 2-0 as time expired.

Coach Negrete knew it was a challenging game to drop but saw some good things in the match.

"We didn't get the result we were looking for, but we saw many positive things come out from our team today," stated Coach Negrete. "We made many subs that usually don't see the minutes, and we wanted to make sure the seniors got as much playing time as possible since it would be the last time they would wear a USW jersey. The boys played well though I saw many guys step up in certain areas, and I saw growth from my young players, which make me look forward to what the future can bring. To my seniors, they will be missed around here. Some of these players were here when I became the head coach at USW, and we have come so far. I appreciate them for all the hard work and sacrifice they had for this program. I do want to apologize to the seniors. I know this wasn't the best season we had here, and I want to apologize to my hard-working seniors and the team.

"To my young players returning for another year or their final year, I have taken this season and learned so much, and as a coach, that's all we can do. I will stay positive and work hard in the recruiting process to ensure the team doesn't go through this kind of season again. I'm very grateful for this year and blessed to finish this year. To my graduating seniors, thank you for everything, and I wish you all the best in the future."
