MSOC: USW Plays to a Draw Against TAMUSA

Hobbs, NM – USW Men's Soccer played host to Texas A&M University-San Antonio (TAMUSA) this weekend. The TAMUSA Jaguars were a struggling side coming into the matchup, winning only one of their last six games.

The Mustangs started peppering shots early as they put out the first three shots within the first sixteen minutes of the match. They would continue this trend by outshooting the TAMUSA Jaguars 5-2 in the first half. Sadly, the continuous push from the Mustangs did not amount to anything, as the game went into the first half tied at zero.

The pressure continued by both sides, and the physicality became more apparent in the second half. Both teams worked for their opportunities throughout, but neither defense would budge. The Mustang defense played well all game to keep the ball away from their half, and Graduate Student Aaron Servin held up strong in goal.

The Mustangs gained the advantage when TAMUSA went to ten men in the 70th minute due to a red card. The Jaguar defense held its own, especially in the game's closing moments, and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.

"We had a very intense game against TAMUSA," stated Coach Edgar Negrete. "We had a lot of opportunities that we could have scored on, but they also had some good chances that our goalkeeper Aaron saved. He made some huge saves for us that kept us in the game. Overall, the team had a great performance and a lot of respect to TAMUSA. They have a good team, and we were able to compete with them through the very end. We didn't get the win; however, we also didn't lose. We have to find a way to win. We can't afford to continue to have these ties because it can hurt us at the end of the season. We will find our way again, and I hope we find it on the road this upcoming week."

"We have a huge and tough week, and we will focus on getting everyone on the same page and see what we can do to come back to Hobbs with victories."

USW Men's Soccer heads on the road for games on October 8th against the University of Houston-Victoria and October 15th against Huston Tillotson University. Continue to follow USW Athletics and USW Men's Soccer on all social media for scores and updates throughout the season.
