Hobbs, NM – The University of the Southwest Women's Soccer team hosted Texas A&M University-San Antonio (TAMUSA) this weekend. USW was sporting a record of 6-2, with all those wins coming in their past six contests. TAMUSA came into the weekend 5-3-1 and 1-1 in the month of October.
The TAMUSA Jaguars did not waste any time getting on the board in this one. Daniela Garcia found Ana Barragan in the 3
rd minute for the game's first score and the first goal the Lady Mustang defense had allowed in the first half in the past four games.
The Jaguars jumped all over the Lady Mustangs once again with a 10
th-minute goal from Hannah Kim, making it 2-0 for TAMUSA. The first half would end with the same score and USW leading in the shot's category 5-3 but without a goal in hand.
USW was looking for adjustments at half to come out and hopefully erase the deficit they were facing. TAMUSA decided otherwise and kept their foot on the gas coming out of the break with a 58
th-minute goal from Daniela Garcia.
Junior
Emma Rocco provided a quick answer for the Lady Mustangs in the same minute as they looked to get a spark going.
Unfortunately, the Jaguar's defense held up for the rest of the match, and TAMUSA left with a 3-1 victory, ending USW's six-game winning streak.
"Texas A&M San Antonio came out today and showed us no respect," said Coach
Edgar Negrete. "They came out early and scored two fast goals in the first half. We went down early and had quite a few opportunities that couldn't find the back of the net. If we would capitalize on our chances, I truly believe we would have a different outcome. I know this was kind of a wake-up call for us, letting us know we can't get comfortable after defeating a tough opponent."
"We have to prepare for the next opponent the following day at practice and not stay on Thursday's game. The girls are devastated, but we have to turn the page and look forward. It's not the end of the world; we lost a soccer game and still have a lot to play for. We have to regroup and prepare for a tough week on the road. One game doesn't make us a bad team. We just have to dust ourselves off and get back to it."
