SB: Lady Mustangs Take Three in Texas

The University of the Southwest Softball Team took a road trip into Texas Monday and Tuesday to take on Arlington Baptist and Dallas Christian College. The Mustangs started the trip in search of their first win of the year and they got that and more on the trip. They collected three wins on the trip and were leading in another game before it was suspended.

After the weekend Coach Chris Petroski said "We fought as a team and played Together. It took all players to step into roles and be ready for any situation. I am very pleased with our young pitching staff for holding their own in the circle."

Monday Game 1: The Mustangs took on Arlington Baptist in what was a high-scoring affair that saw both offenses have some success. The Mustangs had 7 hits and drew 4 walks as well as took advantage of 4 ABU errors en route to the 9-7 victory. Ashley Alvarez went 6 innings on the mound for the Mustangs allowing 6 earned and Lia Gutierrez earned the victory with a scoreless inning of relief. Mikayla Martinez went 2 for 4 in the contest with an RBI and a run scored. Arianna Campa came off the bench to go 1 for 2 with 3 RBI's and Serena Olivas was 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs.

Monday Game 2: The second game of the day was called midway through due to lightning in the area that wasn't going to pass. The Mustangs were leading at the time the game was called and the teams will look to resume the game later in the year.

Tuesday Game 1: The Mustangs took on Dallas Christian College in what amounted to be a good battle in game 1. The Mustangs were able to collect 9 hits draw a walk and take advantage of 3 errors by Dallas Christian and won 6-4. They paired that offensive performance with an excellent performance on the mound from Sophomore Sierra Flores. Flores went all seven innings allowing only 2 earned runs and earned the victory in the contest. Brittany McCorry-White was 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs in the contest and center fielder Aubrey Ramos was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored.

Tuesday Game 2: The second game against Dallas Christian was full of offense from both sides. The Mustangs collected an impressive 16 hits to help them score their 13 runs. The Mustangs made a couple of defensive miscues in the game that allowed DCC to stay in the ball game and ultimately force extra innings. The Mustangs would score 4 in the 8th to put the game away 13-9. Seven Mustangs collected at least 2 hits in the contest: Mikayla Martinez (3), Felicity Villanueva, Madison Ganaway, Makenna Medina, Aubrey Ramos, Kenzi Savell, and Shayla Rey. Lia Gutierrez earned another victory in relief going 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 1 hit.

Petroski later added further context to the weekend by saying "I'm super proud of the fight that our girls had this weekend on the road in Dallas. We battled every inning whether we were up or down on the scoreboard. Also, it was our first International Tie-Breaker of the season in which we scored 4 to have a nice cushion for our defense in the bottom half of the inning."

The Lady Mustangs will be back in action on Tuesday, March 1st at home against UTPB in a doubleheader starting at 2 PM.
