The University of the Southwest Women's Basketball Team played their final regular-season game on Tuesday night here at the Maddox SLC. They took on the Paul Quinn Tigers who entered (14-10) and (6-7) in conference play. The Mustangs had gotten the better of the tigers in their previous matchup in early January, winning 85-81. The Evening was also a special one because it was senior night and there were four Lady Mustangs who were honored in the festivities:
Veronica Barrot,
Kenedi Tanks,
Shanyce Cabrales, and
Harlei Haceesa.
Southwest started the game by knocking down seemingly everything en route to a 28 point quarter and a 28-18 lead after one. The game had its back and forth moments with the Mustangs in control through three quarters leading 70-55 heading into the fourth quarter. Paul Quinn fought its way back in the fourth outscoring the Mustangs 31-18 in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs trailed by one with 2.0 seconds remaining and drew up a play out of a timeout for senior
Shanyce Cabrales who caught the inbound, stepped through a double team, and banked home a three with 0.6 seconds on the clock. The Mustangs were able to hold on for the 88-86 victory over the Tigers. Cabrales had a big night with 18 points on 6 of 8 from three,
Harlei Haceesa added 19 points and
Kenedi Tanks had 14 points and 8 rebounds.
After the game Head Coach
Michael Dominguez said "Overall, I am happy with how Senior Night went! We played 3 amazing quarters and then 1 not so great quarter that allowed them to come back and make the game very close but we ended up winning. The team really put on a show in their last home game, especially from 3 (shooting 47% from 3FG). That's what we do, so it wasn't a huge surprise to see them shoot that way. We are ranked #1 in conference and #20 in the nation for 3FG% so that is sort of our identity. Super happy for
Shanyce Cabrales,
Kenedi Tanks,
Veronica Barrot, and
Harlei Haceesa! They got the go out with a W and Shanyce had a movie-like moment to end her career, hitting the game-winning 3 point shot with 2.0 seconds left on the clock."
The Mustangs now turn their attention to the RRAC Tournament where they will be matched up with the 1 seed from the East Division, the Xavier Gold Nuggets. The Gold Nuggets enter the contest (20-5) and (15-1) in conference play, winning their last 14 games of the year. The Mustangs will have to be at their best to beat them. Coach Dominguez looking forward to the tournament added "It's a big moment but we now have to shift gears and prepare for Conference Tournament. The girls are really excited to be going to the tournament, the program hasn't made an appearance in 11 years so it's a big deal for our players! We play XULA who we recently played and played them close so hopefully we can make some adjustments and pull off the first-round upset."
