The University of the Southwest Women's Basketball Team took on the Steers of Texas College on Tuesday evening here in the Jack & Mabel Maddox Student Life Center. The game was a make-up of a game previously scheduled for January and featured two teams that were hungry for a win in keeping their hopes alive for the RRAC Tournament.
The team from Texas College entered the contest at (6-6) overall and (2-2) in RRAC play and were fresh off of a win against Jarvis Christian the previous night. The game was pretty even throughout most of the contest which saw Texas College take a one-point lead to the half. The Lady Mustangs came out ready to go in the second half outscoring Texas College 21-15 in the third. The fourth quarter was fast-paced and high scoring with the Mustangs outscoring the Steers 30-29 to earn the 88-82 victory. The Mustangs did a phenomenal job of sharing the ball on Tuesday night collecting 28 assists on their 34 made baskets and had 5 players score in double figures. They knocked in 11 three-pointers in the contest at a 35.5% clip.
Harlei Haceesa led the Mustangs in scoring with 20 points on 7 of 12 from the floor, collected 8 rebounds, and 7 assists.
Tiayana Williams collected 17 points on 4 of 6 from the three-point range.
Shanyce Cabrales added 14 points of her own with 4 three-pointers.
The Mustangs will be on the road for their next contest, traveling to Texarkana to take on TAMUT at 4:30 MST on Thursday evening. They will be looking to gain a game in the standings against a division foe.
