SB: Mustangs Open Up Conference Play

The University of the Southwest Softball Team traveled to Texas over the weekend to open up their conference schedule. They took on the University of Houston-Victoria on Friday and Huston-Tillotson on Saturday. The Mustangs came into the weekend (3-8) to start the year. The Jaguars of UHV entered receiving votes in the coach's poll and (9-4) to start the year. The Rams of HT entered (6-10).

UHV
Game 1: The Mustangs fell behind 2-0 after one before clawing back to tie it at two after the top half of the third. The Jaguars would answer back with one in the bottom of the third and wouldn't look back from there, defeating the Mustangs 11-3 in six innings. The Mustangs collected seven hits in the contest, led by multi-hit games from shortstop Madison Ganaway and right fielder Lili Medina.

Game 2: The Mustangs were unable to get much going against the talented UHV bunch in game two. They fell behind 2-0 after one but would bring it to 2-1 in the fourth inning on an RBI ground out by Brittany McCorry White. UHV would then score 8 in the final two innings with the Mustangs adding one more on a Mikayla Martinez RBI single. They would drop the game 10-2 in six innings. The offense collected five hits and two walks in the contest. They were led offensively again by shortstop Madison Ganaway who was three for three in the contest with both Mustang runs scored.

Huston-Tillotson
Game 1: The Mustangs fell behind early in game one allowing a run in the first and four in the second before getting on the board on a Felicity Villanueva walk with the bases loaded to make the score 5-1. HT would add four more from that point to take the game 9-1 in six innings. The offense collected six hits and three walks in the contest but was unable to take advantage. Felicity Villanueva was one for two with a walk and an RBI. Lili Medina was two for three and Aubrey Ramos was one for three with a triple and a run scored.

Game 2: The Mustangs would strike first in this one, getting on the board with a Sylvia Lona RBI double in the first inning to make it 1-0. HT would answer with two runs in the bottom of the first and six in the second to make it 8-1 after two. USW answered with two in the third on an RBI triple from Sylvia Lona and an RBI single from Kenzi Savell to make it 8-3. It was all HT from there and they would take the game 15-3 in five innings. The offense collected eight hits and five walks in the contest. Three Mustangs had two-hit performances in the contest: Sylvia Lona, Kenzi Savell, and Analycia Herrera.

After the weekend Head Coach Chris Petroski explained "Despite defensive miscues, our offense did put a lot of runners on base. We need to continue to build offensively and create opportunities and follow through." Looking forward at the schedule he added "This weekend was good to see conference opponents and what they have. We will be ready this week going on the road again."

The Mustangs will be on the road this upcoming weekend for doubleheaders against LSU Alexandria on Friday and number fifteen Texas A&M Texarkana on Saturday.
