The University of the Southwest Baseball Team continued their road trip in New Orleans, LA with a Tuesday doubleheader against the Wolf Pack of Loyola University. Southwest came in at (18-4) while Loyola came in receiving votes in the latest NAIA poll and at (14-12) on the year after going (36-15) a year ago. The two teams had not matched up in recent memory.
Game 1: The Wolf Pack got out to a 2-0 lead in the second and would push four more across in the fourth. The Mustangs would get two runs on the board in the fifth courtesy of an
Omar Baldenegro two-RBI single to make the score 6-2. Loyola would add three more before it was all said and done to win the game 9-2 in seven innings.
Omar Baldenegro was two for three with the two RBIs.
Hayden Woods,
Caden Ledbetter, and
Nicholas Palomino each had a hit in the contest.
Game 2: The Mustangs came out with a more aggressive approach in game two and got on the board early. The Mustangs would put two runs on the board in the first inning courtesy of a
Tariq Levesque two-RBI double. Loyola would answer back with two of their own in the bottom of the first. A
Jose Chavez Jr. RBI single in the fourth and
Gabriel Perez-Torres RBI double in the fifth would put the Mustangs up 4-2. Loyola would score a run in the fifth and sixth to tie the game at four. Southwest capitalized on a miscue by Loyola in the seventh, with
Hayden Woods scoring on a passed ball to give the Mustangs the 5-4 lead.
Isaac Baeza would come on for the seventh and secure his NAIA leading seventh save of the year to give the Mustangs the victory.
Jonathan Gamboa took advantage of his first start of the year going four innings, allowing three hits, one earned run and striking out a pair.
Michael Downs would come on in a big spot in the fifth, with the go-ahead run on second and one out. He collected a strikeout and pop out to get the Mustangs out of the inning. The Mustangs collected eight hits in the contest with a trio of Mustangs collecting two.
Andru Sanchez,
Gabriel Perez-Torres, and
Kevin Rase collected two hits each in the contest.
The Mustangs now sit at (19-5) headed into a first-place showdown with (#4) LSU Shreveport on Thursday and Friday. The winner of the series will hold sole possession of first place in the RRAC.
