Hawkins, TX – The USW Men's soccer team played their second conference game this weekend. They would be hosted by the Jarvis Christian University Bulldogs with a record of 3-1-2 on the season.
The Mustangs looked to set the tone early. That came in the form of an 8
th-minute goal from Sophomore
Angel Marban. With a 1-0 lead, USW was poised to win their third game in a row and get back to .500. Jarvis Christian looked to prevent that from happening as they pushed to find the back of the net in the 16
th minute, tying the game at one a piece.
USW would march back and add another goal in the 30
th minute of the match. This would come from Junior Millaivy Lopez off of an assist by Sophomore
Guadalupe Meza. But the Jarvis Bulldogs would not go down without matching with another goal right before the half. In the 45
th minute, an assist from Sergio Escareno would lead to a Kevin Ochoa goal, making it 2-2 before the half.
Scoring chances were plenty as the Mustangs found themselves back on top in the 53
rd minute with a goal from Junior
Adrian Cuevas goal. JCU refused to be put away as they added another goal in the 60
th minute when Obed Sepulveda found Kyang Dieu Merci for the score.
After about twenty minutes of no scoring, Sophomore
Roberto Canales put the Mustangs ahead in the 80
thminute to make it a 4-3 game. Graduate Student
Gerardo Tenorio added some insurance in the 90
th that would put Jarvis Christian away.
"I can see that the boys were ready to come out and play today. They know that we have to take care of each game in front of us," said Coach
Edgar Negrete. "We knocked the ball around pretty well. We had our identity and came out to play as a team. I don't think I've seen us score the way we did today. We had so much build-up and moving the ball around. We did textbook passing that we were working on at practice and executed just like we trained. Jarvis is a good team, and much respect to them. We made three errors, and they capitalized on all three of them. We had a great performance from our goal keep, Aaron Servín, who made some big saves, and we also had a great game from all our midfield and forwards today. We also had three games this week and had a lot of injuries today, but the boys really wanted it and played all the way. They dealt with obstacles thrown at them today very well and showed a lot of maturity. We had a long week, but it was a great one. Three games, three wins; you can't ask for anything better. I'm beyond happy with the boys. We enjoy the victory today, and it's back to the lab on Monday to focus on another tough opponent, which will continue to get more challenging as we go."
Men's Soccer will travel back to Texas for their next game at Paul Quinn College on Saturday, October 1
