WSOC: USW Wins Fourth Straight

Hawkins, TX – The University of Southwest Women's soccer team took a trip to Hawkins, TX, to take on the Jarvis Christian University Bulldogs in an RRAC Conference matchup. The Lady Mustangs entered the weekend with a 3-2 record and coming off of a big win against Texas College.

The first half began with both sides testing the defenses with shots within the first two minutes of the match. Both teams' offenses continued to push one another throughout the first half with five shots a piece. Even with all that pressure, neither team could put a goal up on the board before the half.

The second half continued the same, with USW and JCU going at one another through corner kicks and shots to test the keepers. It was not until almost the end that the scoreless game would finally get something on the board.

"Coming to Jarvis, I knew it wouldn't be easy. It is always a hard place to come and play. It was a battle for the whole game," said Coach Edgar Negrete.

In the 84th minute, Graduate Student Jennifer Schroeder would fire one at JCU's goal that would find the back of the net. That is all the Lady Mustangs would need as the defense continued to perform well for their third shutout in the last four games. USW would take down the Bulldogs 1-0 for their fourth straight win.

"I can see the girls were getting tired, and their legs were getting heavy. We made some adjustments and decided to go with Jenifer Schroeder as a forward towards the last minutes of the game, and it paid off for us," Coach Negrete said. "She received the ball in the corner and turned and hit the ball top corner and scored a screamer. It was a world-class goal. That gave us the 1-0 victory."

"I'm extremely proud of the girls overall. I knew this was going to be a challenging week. We had three games this week, and we were nervous about how much these games would take a toll on our bodies, but these girls buckled down and finished the week strong and went 3-0 this week. I'm proud of the effort and fight the girls gave. The defense and our goalies have given us two clean sheets this week, and they deserve a lot of this praise because they are coming out and playing. It's only going to get harder from here in conference play, but we will worry about that another day. Today we will enjoy the win and focus on Paul Quinn come Monday. I'm proud of these girls. They are giving everything they can. As a coach, that's all I can ask for."

USW Women's Soccer looks to extend their win streak to five when they take on Paul Quinn College Saturday, October 1st, on the road. Continue to follow USW Athletics and USW Women's Soccer on all social media for scores and updates throughout the season.
