The University of the Southwest Men's Basketball team took on two RRAC opponents at home this past week. The Mustangs looked to erase a four-game losing streak as they hosted Huston-Tillotson University and Our Lady of the Lake University. USW fell on Thursday evening to Huston-Tillotson by a score of 78-69 but came back with a well-earned victory against OLLU, 91-88.
Huston Tillotson
With the end of the season nearing quickly, the Mustangs (8-8, 4-5 RRAC) looked to get themselves in a better position for postseason play. Huston-Tillotson (6-10, 4-6 RRAC) were also looking to improve their spot in the standings as they were sitting below USW coming into the matchup.
Although Huston-Tillotson was the team sitting lower in the RRAC standings, the Rams came out strong early, applying pressure to the Mustangs offensively and defensively. HTU would end the first half with a lead 30-28, leaving adjustments to be made for USW prior to the second half.
Adjustments were not quite enough as Huston-Tillotson played some more of the same basketball in the second half. They would also hold the Mustangs to just 36.1% shooting from the field, leading them to a 78-69 victory.
Junior
Miles Macadory led the Mustangs in scoring with 16 points with four rebounds and two assists off the bench. Sophomore
Sherrod Whitley added 10 points to the scoring, and Sophomore
Qua King had himself a near double-double with eight points and eight rebounds.
Our Lady of the Lake
The Mustangs (9-8, 5-5 RRAC) were looking for an answer to their now five-game losing streak as they headed into Saturday. They would be taking on an OLLU (10-8, 5-5 RRAC) squad who were sitting right in the middle of the RRAC standings with USW.
Southwest began the game strong and put themselves ahead of the Saints going into halftime. With the score 42-38 at the half, the Mustangs would just need another solid period of play to end their losing streak.
The Mustangs would play well once again in the second half but were met with some resistance late in the game. OLLU was able to make it tight, but USW would hang on for the win, 91-88.
Junior
Jahvonta Jones played a big role in the scoring with 19 points and added three assists and two steals. Senior
Tre Thomas scored 16 points and had four assists and three rebounds. Junior
