WBB: USW Takes One of Two in RRAC Matchups

The Lady Mustangs of the University of the Southwest traveled to Louisiana to take on two conference opponents on the road. Southwest took on two opponents sitting on opposite ends of the RRAC standings. On Thursday, the Lady Mustangs played tough against a strong LSU Shreveport team but fell 89-80 in overtime. They were able to bounce back when they took on LSU Alexandria on Saturday with a 67-63 victory.

LSU Shreveport

The Lady Stangs (1-6, 3-10 RRAC) had a slow first quarter as they trailed 20-18 against Shreveport (5-2, 11-4 RRAC) but then turned it around the next two quarters. USW played strong defensively in the second quarter and went into the half with a 35-34 lead.

Southwest would continue to play well as they outscored LSUS 23-18 in the third. Unfortunately, Shreveport would tie the game late following a solid fourth quarter, sending the game into overtime. USW would fall short of a big win as they fell in overtime 89-80.

Junior Tamaria White showed out for USW with 26 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Senior Sierra Smith had another strong game on the boards with 20 rebounds and added 12 points as well. Freshman Karinna Ortiz scored 15 points and shot 4-7 from beyond the arc.

LSU Alexandria

The Lady Mustangs (3-11, 1-7 RRAC) took on a struggling Louisiana State Alexandria squad (3-11, 2-5 RRAC) on Saturday. The Lady Stangs started hot, leading Alexandria 21-13 in the first quarter. The second quarter was a little shaky for USW as LSU Alexandria put together a 21-14 run against the Lady Mustangs.

The third quarter went in the way of Southwest with an 18-16 showing, keeping them ahead 53-50 at the end of three. The defense held up in the final quarter as USW finished off LSUA 67-63.

Senior Awreona Ransom led the way with 20 points and added five rebounds. Senior Sierra Smith grabbed ten boards with eight points. Junior Tamaria White scored twelve points with five steals and three assists.
