The University of the Southwest Women's Basketball made their final road trip of the year for their final games of the regular season. The Lady Mustangs would be taking on Huston-Tillotson and Our Lady of the Lake, in which USW dropped the previous contest against both teams earlier this season. Unfortunately, the Lady Mustangs would not get their revenge as they dropped both games.
Huston-Tillotson
The Lady Mustangs took on Huston-Tillotson University in Austin for the teams' second meeting of the season. USW would struggle to get going in the first quarter as the Rams held them to just six points.
Southwest would play great defense in the second quarter, holding their opponent to just nine points, but the offense still could not capitalize to get them back into the game. HTU would go into the half with a 30-14 lead.
The third quarter stayed tight between the two sides, with HTU outscoring USW by just one point. Both sides would score 16 in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Mustangs would never be able to overcome the first-quarter differential as they fell 61-44.
Junior Tamria White led the scoring for USW with 12 points and also had six rebounds and four steals. Senior
Sierra Smith finished with nine points and eight rebounds, while Junior
Tiayana Williams had seven points.
Our Lady of the Lake
The Lady Mustangs aimed for a better result than the last time they took on OLLU at home. Southwest would keep it tight early, only being down 20-17 at the half. The second quarter would bring some more of the same, with offense at the forefront. The Saints would go into the half with a 39-35 lead.
After halftime and a chance for adjustments, both sides would explode on offense, with USW scoring 26 in the quarter. OLLU would continue to stay one step ahead as they put up 29. The defense of the Saints would finally stifle USW and create the cushion they needed as they outscored the Lady Mustangs 16-6 in the final quarter. The season finale would end with OLLU winning 84-67.
Freshman
Karinna Ortiz had herself a tremendous game with 18 points while shooting 50% from downtown.
Tamaria White had 15 points and five rebounds, while Senior
Awreona Ransom chipped in with 13 points.
The Lady Mustangs will look to bounce back when they return for the 2023-2024 season. Continue to follow USW Athletics and USW Women's Basketball on all social media for updates throughout the year.
