The University of the Southwest Lady Mustangs continued their Texas road trip with another doubleheader against Red River Athletic Conference opponent Jarvis Christian Bulldogs. USW was coming off a series split against Texas College, 10-3 and 2-3, and was aiming for even better on Saturday. In their meeting last season, the Lady Mustangs split with the Bulldogs. We would get a series split again, with USW winning game one 2-0 and falling in game two 1-6.
GAME 1
A pitcher's duel would be how this series started, with starter
Hope Quinones tossing seven scoreless innings and striking out seven in a dominant outing. Luckily, the Lady Mustangs were able to strike early in the first inning when
Xyla Madry doubled to score
Mikayla Martinez and
Michaela Trevino.
That would be all the runs produced for the game as solid defense and Quinones' strong start led them to a victory over Jarvis.
GAME 2
The Lady Mustangs got on the board first once again in game two of the series.
Michaela Trevino singled and scored in the inning to give USW the early lead and a chance for a series sweep.
The Lady Bulldogs were looking to avoid that as they had themselves a 4
th inning when two singles brought in three runs to give them the lead. They would tack on another run in the 5
th inning on an RBI ground out to extend their lead to 4-1. In the 6
th inning, Jarvis hit back-to-back doubles to bring in two more runs and create a big enough cushion to take the second game.
The Lady Mustangs could not muster up anything in the top half of the 7
th inning as Jarvis went on to win 6-1.
Head Coach
Chris Petroski on the weekend, "Being on the road this past weekend, we knew it was going to be a challenge. We needed to win as many games as possible. We hit great on Friday vs. TC but left too many base runners on base. We fought on Saturday, but our offense wasn't able to produce."
"Moving forward for this weekend, we must stay consistent on offense, defense, and in the circle. I believe we have the talent and numbers to get the job done to get to the postseason."
The Lady Mustangs hit the road again as they take on Houston-Victoria on April 29
th to wrap up the regular season. Continue to follow USW Athletics and USW Softball on all social media for scores and updates throughout the season.
