Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Jonathan Gamboa

Southwest Falls Short Against LSU Shreveport, 3-1

Southwest came up short in their match against LSU Shreveport, falling 3-1 in a competitive game. Despite their best efforts, Southwest couldn't capitalize on key opportunities, and LSU Shreveport's offense proved too strong.

First Half Struggles

Southwest started the game strong, creating a few chances early, including a shot from Millaivy Lopez that hit the post in the 5th minute. However, LSU Shreveport found their rhythm midway through the first half, with David Vejsmose opening the scoring in the 35th minute, assisted by Jack Thomas. Just a minute later, LSU Shreveport doubled their lead through Jack Thomas, with Alex Golder providing the assist.

The quick double blow left Southwest trailing 2-0 going into halftime, despite creating four shots in the half.

Second Half Fightback

Southwest came out fighting in the second half, looking to close the gap. Their persistence paid off in the 60th minute when Nicolas Amparan scored, assisted by Angel Marban, bringing the score to 2-1 and reigniting hope for a comeback.

However, LSU Shreveport's defense, led by goalkeeper Kyle Mcleish, stood firm. Mcleish recorded nine saves in the match, denying Southwest several good chances to equalize, including crucial saves against Yahir Chacon and Malachi Rodriguez.

Late Goal Seals Southwest's Fate

With time running out, Southwest continued to press for an equalizer, but LSU Shreveport struck again in the 84th minute. Jack Thomas netted his second goal of the match, assisted by David Vejsmose, putting the game out of reach at 3-1.

Southwest's goalkeeper, Jeremy Rueda, had a busy game with six saves, but the pressure from LSU Shreveport's 17 total shots, nine of which were on target, proved too much.

Looking Ahead

The loss brings Southwest's record to 3-7-2 overall and 1-6-2 in conference play. Despite the defeat, Southwest showed moments of resilience, especially in the second half, and will look to build on those positives as they prepare for their next match.

Key Stats:

  • Southwest: 14 shots, 10 on goal, 1 goal (Nicolas Amparan)
  • LSU Shreveport: 17 shots, 9 on goal, 3 goals (Jack Thomas, David Vejsmose)
  • Saves: Southwest's Jeremy Rueda (6), LSU Shreveport's Kyle Mcleish (9)

Southwest will need to regroup quickly as they continue their challenging conference schedule. The team has shown they can compete but will need to find more consistency to get back into the win column.

The Mustangs will travel to Texarkana, Texas to take on Texas A&M Texarkana on Saturday, October 19th at 3:30 PM CT.
