Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Jonathan Gamboa

Lady Mustangs drop 2 Matches this past weekend

In a tightly contested match on October 25, 2024, the Lady Mustangs and conference opponent Huston-Tillotson, went 5 sets and the Lady Mustangs come up short in the end and lose the match 2-3. Southwest took sets two and three but couldn't close out the match, falling 16-25, 25-21, 25-20, 19-25, 12-15.

Southwest's offense struggled with efficiency, tallying 30 kills on 173 total attempts, hitting at a .139 percentage. Despite these struggles, there were standout performances. Chloe Paul led the offense with 13 kills and a .370 hitting percentage, contributing a total of 13 points to her team. Danna Gamez and Amaiya Williams were also crucial contributors. Gamez managed 11 kills but also had 8 errors on 35 attempts, hitting only .086, while Williams contributed 10 kills, hitting a more efficient .222.

The setting responsibilities primarily fell to Starlett Hoyuela, who had 27 assists and chipped in 2 service aces. On defense, Maya Morales was a standout player with 29 digs, trying to hold Huston-Tillotson's offense at bay. However, it wasn't enough to prevent Southwest from dropping the final set and the match.

The following day, on October 26, Huston-Tillotson once again bested Southwest in four sets, this time winning 3-1 with set scores of 21-25, 25-27, 25-20, and 14-25. Despite a valiant effort, Southwest couldn't maintain momentum after taking the third set.

In this second matchup, Southwest again faced difficulties offensively, hitting at a low .044 overall. They managed 39 kills but committed 39 errors on 181 attempts. Amaiya Williams was a bright spot with 14 kills and a strong .357 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, Aneesa Thompson added 11 kills, hitting .269. Setter Starlett Hoyuela dished out 24 assists, but the team was unable to build sustained attacks against a resilient Huston-Tillotson defense. Morales continued her strong play on defense, amassing 30 digs.

The losses leave Southwest needing to find better offensive consistency to close out future matches, especially after competitive starts in both contests.

The Lady Mustangs will be back in action on October 29th in Brownwood, Texas as they will take on NCAA Division 3 opponent Howard Payne Univeristy.
