A Heartbreaking Loss: University of Southwest Falls to Paul Quinn College in Triple OT

In an intense battle that stretched over three overtimes, the University of Southwest (USW) narrowly missed victory against Paul Quinn College (PQC), succumbing 90-86 on November 23, 2024. Despite a valiant effort, the visitors couldn't close the deal in a game marked by resilience, strategy, and individual brilliance.

The Story of the Game
USW started strong, outscoring PQC 18-8 in the first quarter, with Briana Montoya leading the charge from beyond the arc. However, as the game progressed, PQC's tenacity began to shine. By the second half, Canai McPherson and Kayla Webster of PQC took control, tightening the deficit and pushing the game into overtime.

While USW displayed exceptional grit, highlighted by Montoya's game-high 30 points and Milinda Arguellez's double-double (21 points, 11 rebounds), costly turnovers (32 in total) and struggles at the free-throw line (5 of 12) proved detrimental. PQC capitalized on these opportunities, with McPherson delivering 34 points, including clutch plays in the closing moments of the third overtime.

Moving Forward
This loss, while painful, serves as a learning opportunity for the University of Southwest. Building on the standout performances of Montoya, Arguellez, and others, the team can take heart from their fighting spirit and ability to compete against formidable opponents.

USW will look to refine its defensive schemes, reduce turnovers, and enhance free-throw consistency as they prepare for upcoming challenges. The determination shown in this marathon game promises a resilient comeback in future contests.

The Lady Mustangs will be back in action on November 26th in Texarkana, Texas at 4:30 PM MT against Texas A&M Texarkana.
