HOBBS, N.M. -- The University of the Southwest women's soccer team put up a determined fight Thursday afternoon against Our Lady of the Lake, but ultimately fell short 5-1 in conference play at Bob Moran Soccer Field.
Despite the final score, the Lady Mustangs showed grit throughout the match. Goalkeeper
Elena Moya stood out, recording 11 saves on the day, 10 of which were in the first half, after relentless attacks from the Saints.
Southwest's lone goal came in the 57th minute when
Joanna Estrada capitalized on a scoring opportunity to cut the deficit to 3-1. Estrada led the team with three shots on goal, while
Jadyn Duran and
Roxana Bustamante also contributed to the offensive push.
The Lady Mustangs increased their pressure in the second half, registering nine shots and earning five corner kicks over the course of the match. However, Our Lady of the Lake responded with two late goals to secure the win.Â
Southwest now sits at 1-11-1 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play. The Lady Mustangs will look to regroup for their next match on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. (MT).
