HOBBS, N.M. -- The Southwest Lady Mustangs delivered a dominant performance Tuesday night, defeating Navajo Technical University 87-62 at the Student Life Center to start off the season on a good note.
Briana Montoya led the way with a game-high 25 points, connecting on 7-11 three-pointers and adding five assists and five steals in a stellar all-around effort. Southwest's offense was firing on all cylinders, shooting 45.7% from the field and 41.4% from beyond the arc, while racking up 19 assists as a team.
The Mustangs took control early, using a 15-1 run in the first quarter to build momentum and never looked back. They outscored the Skyhawks 54-34 in the second half, showcasing depth and defensive intensity.
Saleen Longoria came out strong to score 13 points on perfect shooting from deep (3-for-3), while
Seniya Wilson anchored the back court with 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals.
Southwest's defense forced 16 turnovers, converting them into 22 points off turnovers and 34 fast break points. The Mustangs also dominated second-chance opportunities, scoring 22 points off offensive rebounds.
With the win, Southwest moves to 1-0 on the season and will look to carry the momentum into their next match-up against Navajo Tech on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
