STAFFORD, Texas -- The University of the Southwest women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against North American on Thursday evening at SaberCats Stadium in a tightly contested road matchup.
Southwest opened the scoring in the 26th minute when
Aleah Ortiz capitalized on a defensive lapse and fired home her second goal for the season. The unassisted strike gave Southwest a 1-0 lead heading into halftime, as the team controlled possession and outshot North American 7-6 in the opening period.
In the second half, North American responded with increased pressure. Despite several key saves from goalkeeper
Elena Moya, who finished with three saves on the night, the hosts found the equalizer in the 82nd minute, leveling the match at 1-1.
Southwest continued to press for a winner, recording 12 total shots and three corner kicks in the second half.
Michelle Perez led the attack with four shots, while
Joanna Estrada,
Rozlynn Ramsey and
Ashly Maradiaga each contributed offensively.
With the result, Southwest moves to 1-9-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play, while North American remains winless at 0-11-1 (0-5-1 conference).
The Lady Mustangs will hit the pitch again on Saturday, October 11, to face Texas A&M University-Victoria with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT).
