HOBBS, N.M. -- The Southwest Mustangs men's basketball team delivered a gritty performance Thursday night, earning a thrilling 79–74 victory over North American in a game that featured 13 ties and 17 lead changes.Â
Southwest set the tone early with efficient shooting, hitting 57.7% from the field in the first half to take a slim 38–36 lead into the break. The Mustangs continued their offensive rhythm in the second half, finishing the game at an impressive 53.7% from the floor and 31.6% from three-point range. Their ability to attack inside was key, outscoring North American 42–34 in the paint.
EJay Scroggins led the charge with a game-high 25 points, adding six assists and four rebounds while converting 8-of-14 from the field and 8-of-13 from the line. Jalen Williams provided a spark with 16 points, including two clutch three-pointers, and Donovan Holcombe added 14 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks to anchor the defense. Jayvian Lawson chipped in nine points and five assists, while Kevin Boone contributed six points and timely boards.
Despite North American's late push, powered by Jamarric Hammond's three-point shooting and Naheim Northern's presence inside, the Mustangs held firm in the final minute. Key baskets from Williams and Scroggins, along with Lawson's free throws, sealed the win.
Southwest dominated the glass (27–26), shared the ball with 11 assists, and showed resilience after surrendering a brief second-half lead. The victory improves the Mustangs to 4–6 overall and 1–3 in conference play, giving them momentum heading into their next matchup on Saturday against Xavier.
