Southwest Secures 70-61 Victory Over Texas College

Tyler, TX – February 4, 2025 – The Southwest men's basketball team delivered a commanding performance on the road, defeating Texas College 70-61 at Gus F. Taylor Gymnasium. Behind a balanced scoring effort and strong defensive play, Southwest improved their conference record and solidified their position in the standings.

First Half: Trading Blows

Southwest started the game strong, moving the ball well and attacking the paint. Anthony Scott led the early offense, knocking down two three-pointers in the first half and finishing with 15 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. Jacob Koontz provided an inside presence, scoring 13 points and grabbing 5 rebounds.

Texas College, however, responded with their own offensive push, led by Tacorey Gillum (11 points, 3 steals) and Michael Hogg (10 points, 3 rebounds). The home team briefly took the lead midway through the half, but Southwest regained control, heading into the break with a 33-26 advantage.

Second Half: Southwest Pulls Away

After halftime, Southwest came out firing, extending their lead to 10 points (43-33) within the first minute of the second half, thanks to a three-pointer from Jalen Mcafee Marion and a layup from Scott. Rahkiem Petterson made his presence felt on defense, recording 3 steals and disrupting Texas College's offense.

Texas College attempted a late rally, cutting the lead to 56-52 after a three-pointer by Jacob Keys. However, Southwest responded with clutch free throws from Norman Beckford, who finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds, and a strong defensive effort that held Texas College to just 30% shooting from the free-throw line (6-for-20).

With just over a minute remaining, James Evans threw down a powerful dunk, sealing the game and securing the 70-61 victory.
