Tyler, TX – February 4, 2025 – In a thrilling conference matchup at Gus F. Taylor Gymnasium, Southwest fought back from a slow first half but ultimately fell short against Texas College, 60-57. Despite a strong fourth-quarter surge, Texas College managed to hold off Southwest in the final moments.
First Half Struggles
Southwest started the game on a high note, taking a 14-6 lead after the first quarter, thanks to a balanced offensive effort. Milinda Arguellez led the team early, knocking down key three-pointers to give Southwest an edge.
However, the second quarter was a different story, as Texas College responded with a dominant 22-7 run, fueled by Tyler Pyburn's inside scoring and Neani Stewart's perimeter presence. Southwest struggled with turnovers and shot only 1-for-6 from beyond the arc in the quarter, heading into halftime trailing 28-21.
Second Half Comeback Attempt
After a halftime reset, Southwest came out with renewed energy in the third quarter, keeping pace with Texas College. Arguellez continued to lead the charge, finishing the game with 25 points, while Celina Celaya added 8 points and 4 rebounds. Despite their efforts, Texas College maintained control and built a nine-point lead (41-32) late in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter saw Southwest make a furious comeback, outscoring Texas College 23-18. Hailee Brandon and Arguellez knocked down key free throws, bringing the game within striking distance. With less than a minute remaining, Celaya hit a clutch three-pointer, cutting Texas College's lead to 60-57.
However, Texas College's defense held firm in the final possession, preventing Southwest from attempting a potential game-tying shot as the clock expired.
