Southwest softball battled through a pair of nail-biters against Texas College, coming away with a dramatic extra-inning win in Game 1 before falling just short in Game 2.
Game 1: Southwest 4, Texas College 3 (8 innings)
Southwest opened the doubleheader with grit and resilience, rallying for a 4-3 extra-inning victory after trailing late. Regan Burleson powered the offense, going 4-for-5 at the plate and scoring twice in a breakout performance.
Trailing 3-2 entering the top of the eighth, Southwest surged ahead with two clutch runs to take a 4-3 lead. In the bottom half, Texas College put two runners aboard, but starting pitcher Alexis Belen remained composed in the circle. Belen went the distance, tossing all 8 innings and recording six strikeouts to seal the win.
It was a complete team effort, with timely hitting, smart base running, and Belen's poised pitching performance leading the way.
Game 2: Texas College 5, Southwest 4
Game 2 was another tightly contested affair, but this time it was Texas College who came away with the win. Southwest continued to swing the bats well, led by Yesenia Rodriguez, who went 3-for-4, and Adriana Nettles, who added a 2-for-4 performance. Regan Burleson stayed hot, blasting a home run to keep Southwest within striking distance.
Despite the offensive push, a late rally by Texas College proved to be the difference. Southwest nearly mounted a comeback in the final inning but came up just short in the 5-4 loss.
Even in defeat, Southwest showed resilience, with key contributions up and down the lineup that showcased the team's depth and competitive spirit.
Coach's Comment:
"The girls fought extremely hard all weekend. These games were very important and there was a lot of pressure to get as many wins as possible. Behind some clutch offense and great defensive plays, we were able to win 3 out of 4 games. This sets us up to compete this week to get into the conference tournament."
