Box Score BETHANY, Okla. — The University of the Southwest men's soccer team opened its 2025 season Thursday afternoon with a hard-fought 1-0 loss on the road against Southwestern Christian University.
The match remained scoreless through the first half, with both teams trading possession and defensive stops. The Mustangs (0-1) held strong until the 67th minute, when SCU's Vinicuius Cruz converted a penalty kick to give the Eagles the decisive goal.
USW produced nine total shots, five of which were on target. Senior Stefano Carvajal led the offensive effort with two shots on goal, while Genesis Carillo and Jose Attong each added one. Goalkeeper, Stephen Chairez, anchored the defense in the second half with five saves, keeping the Mustangs within reach.
The Mustangs earned six corner kicks and committed just six fouls, making an attempt to maintain control. Yellow cards were issued to Giuliano Maceroni and Sebastian Valdez in the second half.
The Mustangs will look to regroup and build momentum as they continue their road schedule at Randall University on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 4 p.m. CDT
